PE_9 What Is Success? FLASH

When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.  Creighton Abrams

"Hands" on elephant
This quote has such a visual impact of an overwhelming task, which is why I start off this blog with this quote. My “elephant” during this course has been my Flash experience and my understanding of it. As an Instructional Designer who uses Flash in her trade I am eager to learn this skill not only because I can put it on my Resume but because I think it is something creative to learn how to do.

Part of my anxiety for this subject may have been the fact that I am currently looking for a new position as an Instructional Designer as my contract is ending with my current employer. With the challenges of my master degree program, current class Emergent Technology Culture, making sure I am moving forward correctly for the Action Research Literature Review and Research project, volunteer obligations, single parenthood, household expenses, worrying about expenses for Christmas, clothing my growing teenage, son who just made the 8th grade basketball team and looking for a new position. (Enough Excuses)

To say that I have been a little overwhelmed this past month is an understatement. An honesty statement for me is that I have nightmares of that “elephant”. How I am going to complete this course with an acceptable grade and accomplish my goal of learning Flash well enough to call it a skill. While I must admit I have not named my “elephant” as of yet but I have dressed her in pink “tutu” and put a big ring on her trunk, to make her look more friendly. In my visions she is dancing a happy dance and that can either be inferred as laughing at me because I have not overcome this demon, or celebrating that I have come this far. (My choices are made depending on the type of day that I am having.)

A elephant in my Nighmares
But I digress… the importance of having Flash as a usable skill is a part of the repertoire that I want to build in my computer experience on my Resume. The advancement of my computer skills is the reason that I put myself in this position in the first place. Flash skills are a priority skill to learn in returning back to school. But so is sanity as what I like to think of myself as an intelligent Woman I acknowledge that to have the Flash skill listed on my resume would make me a better employee prospect, which skill would come in very handy especially right now. I also acknowledge that “ Words are cheap. The biggest thing you can say is 'elephant'. “Charlie Chaplin .

A elephant with anxiety
As an anxiety driven person, I have to remember that “When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.” Also means that the journey is part of the learning experience. For me to be as dangerous as I am in Flash is an accomplishment. While a part of my anxiety may have my prior knowledge of the subject or it could be that I was trying to conjure such a big elephant in a short time.

With that stated I want to say that for this Personal Experience #9 I have taken another bite of the “elephant” in naming her Flash, dressing her in her Tutu and slippers. While she may continue to dance in my dreams the knowledge that I have gained for actively using Lynda.com as a resource for learning new Technology has made her a lot less intimidating soon we may be dancing together on a Flash image near you.
So….. if you know anyone in the Atlanta Area who is currently looking for an Instructional Designer with an Undergraduate degree in Communications, Masters Degree in Curriculum and soon a second Masters Degree in Education Media Design and Technology. Who has worked with instruction and Curriculum training for more than 17 years experience in with Technical Training, Technical Writing with an emphasis in Telecommunications. Please send them my way.

Flash and I will be doing our “Tutu” dance of joy together.
